Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant once again.
The 32-year old reality star and entrepreneur made the announcement on the cover of Us Weekly, saying she took a pregnancy test about five weeks ago.
"Now I'm nine weeks along," she said. "You're supposed to wait 12 weeks to tell people, but I feel confident."
Kardashian and Disick, who are already parents to nearly two-year-old son Mason, also discussed the good news with E! Online, the home network of all their television ventures. Kourtney just started a mommy blog, shooting videos that give tips and tricks to new mothers based on her time raising Mason.
Kourtney, along with her sisters Kim and Khloe, cover the January 2012 issue of Glamour; amongst other things, Kim sighed that, following her divorce, perhaps she's not meant to have children.

Hello and welcome to Dancing With The Stars, THE RESULTS! Tonight, the first couple of the season is sent home…saying goodbye to the mirrorball trophy forever. The show opens with a pro dance to Lady Gaga’s Edge of Glory. Is it wrong how much I’ve missed these dances? The dance was choreographed by Lacey. Tom announces that the new members of the troupe will be introduced later.
Rob and Cheryl, Elisabetta and Val and Ricki and Derek are called to the stage first. We get a montage of their performances from last night before getting to their results.

The Dancing With the Stars results from last night’s first elimination of the season were not at all surprising — not even to the eliminated celebrity. From the moment that Ron Artest (aka Metta World Peace) stepped on to the dance floor, you just knew it was not going to be good.
NBA player Ron Artest and partner Peta Murgatroyd just were not meant to make it past the first week on Dancing With the Stars. Oh, Peta was great and the consumate professional. Ron Artest, however, was like a log with wooden legs. He might ‘dance’ on the basketball court, but in the ballroom he is a dud.
The dancing pair’s cha cha routine scored only a lowly 14 points out of a potential 30 in the Dancing With the Stars results from the judges. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba said the routine “was sexy, but wrong for all the technical reasons.” Rob Kardashian and Nancy Grace joined Ron Artest in the bottom three.
Artest, who oficially changed his name to Metta World Peace recently, was the first to admit he “didn’t really put in enough time and effor to go on” in the competition.
“I’m a clown. I think I was maybe having too much fun. But, you know, somebody had to go early and first. Somebody had to go,” he told Access Hollywood. “But I had a blast. The cast is great, all the dancers. I met new people, new personalities. I got a chance to experience a new thing.”
As for his winner prediction, Metta World Peace was ‘amazed’ by former Queer Eye for the Straight Guy star Carson Kressley. “I was happy to see Chaz [Bono] — Chaz did pretty good. He didn’t mess up. And then Nancy [Grace] did awesome, but Carson — he’s the total package.”

About the Show

Season 12 is a wrap and what a season it was! Before the dazzling finale, we were treated to many weeks of shoes flying, stars crying, pros stumbling and an ever-changing leaderboard! The hits kept coming (as did the misses) as the stars rehearsed hard and danced harder in pursuit of the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.
Right out of the gate there were strong performances like Kirstie Alley's Cha Cha and Ralph Macchio's Foxtrot in Week One. Some routines were deemed not-so-hot, as 'Psycho' Mike Catherwood and Lacey Schwimmer found out as the first couple sent home. Hey, someone had to go, right?
Wendy Williams and Tony Dovolani's low scores put them on the short list for elimination and, sure enough, they were the next sent packing. Boxing champ Sugar Ray Leonard was knocked out (with Anna Trebunsakaya) in Week Four. Although Petra Nemcova may be a survivor, she and Dmitry Chaplin didn't survive Week Five.
In Week Six, wrestling superstar Chris Jericho brought some surprisingly elegant moves to the ballroom, but his Tango wasn't tough enough to keep him from being sent home fifth this season. Kendra Wilkinson followed him out the door the next week.
This left us with our Final Five: Chelsea Kane, Hines Ward, Kirstie Alley, Ralph Macchio and Romeo. Even though Romeo's dancing saw great improvement, he received his walking papers in Week Eight. And in Week Nine, we said goodbye to Karate Kid Ralph Macchio. And then there were three.
Chelsea Kane, Hines Ward and Kirstie Alley worked hard to make it to the finals. Chelsea suffered stinging commentary from the judges at times, but always remained upbeat and focused. Hines seemed to do well each and every week. Even if he didn't, you'd never have known it because of that infectious smile. And even though Kirstie suffered every mishap imaginable, she was stronger than ever heading into the finale. When all the judging and voting was done, it was Hines Ward and Kym Johnson who danced away with the Mirror Ball Trophy as the champs of Season 12. Congrats to them both!

It was a star-studded night of unexpected surprises and old favorites.
The sixties-centric "Mad Men" won its fourth best drama award Sunday but couldn't pull honors for stars Jon Hamm or Elisabeth Moss.
Kyle Chandler was the surprise winner in the best drama actor category for the last season of Texas football drama "Friday Night Lights," blocking odds-on favorites among his fellow nominees, including Hamm.
And then there was "Modern Family," the Emmy winner for Best Comedy. Early on, the ABC comedy won two comedy acting categories with wins from Julie Bowen for Supporting Actress and Ty Burrell for Supporting Actor. In addition, Michael Alan Spiller also won an outstanding comedy directing award for the episode "Halloween," while Jeffrey Richman and Steve Levitan won for best comedy writing.

Emmy winners: surprise hauls for Modern Family and Downton

The 1950s drama Mad Men and a firmly 21st century comedy, Modern Family, won the top drama and comedy prizes at the Emmy Awards, with the British period piece Downton Abbey enjoying unexpected success.
After failing to score in the categories for which it was nominated, Mad Men took the Emmy for best drama in a final-act cliffhanger.
Modern Family made the biggest haul in the comedy category, as well as the top comedy award.
Downton Abbey took four awards in total, including best miniseries, best director, and best actress for Maggie Smith. The show, whose second series started on ITV in Britain on Sunday night, has been a critical success on the US network PBS.
Oscar-winning actor Kate Winslet won her first Emmy, for her lead role in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce. "I didn't think we were going to win anything!" Winslet said.
On a night of surprises that brought a slew of newcomers to the Emmy podium, Mad Men won best drama series for a fourth straight year but the waiting got tense as the 1960s advertising drama lost out in all the acting, writing and directing races.
"I did not think that was going to happen," creator Matthew Weiner said, accepting the best drama series trophy. Mad Men has gone home with just two Emmys – including one from last week's creative arts ceremony – even though it came into the awards show with 19 nominations.
"We were shut out, but then we also won this (best drama) award so it balances out. To me this is the prize that says people love what we are doing," Weiner said backstage.
The story was different for Modern Family. Along with its best comedy win, the ABC mockumentary about three assorted couples and their children brought first-time wins for Julie Bowen and her screen husband Ty Burrell in the supporting acting slots, and Emmys for directing and writing.
Creator Steve Levitan called the wins "an embarrassment of riches" while actor Ed O'Neill said: "It was better than the first time. To repeat is difficult. I am relieved."
"Welcome back to the Modern Family awards!" Emmy ceremony host Jane Lynch joked early in the evening.
Elsewhere, a host of new faces took home Emmys in a night that defied most predictions.
The little-seen but critically admired football drama Friday Night Lights won for best writing and its star Kyle Chandler beat favourites Jon Hamm and Steve Buscemi for best dramatic actor.
Melissa McCarthy won lead comedy actress at her first shot for the CBS romantic comedy Mike & Molly, in which she plays an overweight teacher.
Emmy rookie Peter Dinklage won for his turn as the clever but rude Tyrion in HBO's popular medieval fantasy series Game of Thrones, while Margo Martindale was an emotional first-time winner for her supporting actress role in the FX drama Justified. The Emmy came to the veteran actress after more than 20 years in the business.
Julianna Margulies, star of The Good Wife on CBS, won the race for best dramatic actress. Jim Parsons was a rare repeat winner for comedy The Big Bang Theory in a category that most pundits had thought would finally go to departing The Office star Steve Carell.
"I am really flabbergasted. I am more shocked this year," Parsons said backstage.
Fox musical comedy Glee - one of the most talked about shows of the last two years - won just two Emmys, both in creative arts categories, while HBO's lavish Boardwalk Empire won seven of its eight total Emmys in last week's technical awards section. Its only win on Sunday night went to director Martin Scorsese.
HBO was the biggest network winner with 19 Emmys, followed by 14 for PBS, 11 for CBS, nine for Fox, eight for ABC and six for NBC.
Among the show's highlights was a smiling and apparently sincere Charlie Sheen, on the comeback trail after months of erratic behaviour that resulted in his firing from CBS hit Two and A Half Men. He was a last-minute addition as a presenter.
"From the bottom of my heart I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season," Sheen said of his former program that previously this year he had sharply criticised.

Pay-per-view (PPV) provides a service by which a television audience can purchase events to view via private telecast. The broadcaster shows the event at the same time to everyone ordering it (as opposed to video-on-demand systems, which allow viewers to see recorded broadcasts at any time). Events can be purchased using an on-screen guide, an automated telephone system, or through a live customer service representative. Events often include feature films, sporting events and entertainment.

United States

The Zenith Phonevision system became the first pay-per-view system tested in the United States. Developed in 1951, it used telephone lines to take and receive orders as well as to de-scramble a broadcast signal. Phonevision field-tests ran for 90 days in Chicago. The system used IBM punched cards to de-scramble a signal broadcast during the broadcast station's "off-time". Both systems showed promise, but the FCC denied them permits.^[1] One of the earliest pay-per-view systems on cable, the Optical Systems Channel 100, first entered service in 1972 in San Diego through Mission Cable^[2] (acquired by Cox Communications) and TheaterVisioN, which operated out of Sarasota, Florida. These early systems quickly went out of business, as the cable industry adopted satellite technology and as flat-rate systems like Home Box Office became popular.
Boxing fans were first introduced to their sport on pay-per-view with the Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier fight "Thrilla In Manila", there was also another in 1980, when Roberto Duran defeated Sugar Ray Leonard. Cable companies offered the match for $10, and about 155,000 customers paid to watch the fight.^[3]
A major pay-per-view event^{[citation needed]} occurred on September 16, 1981, when Sugar Ray Leonard fought Thomas "Hitman" Hearns for the Welterweight Championship. Viacom Cablevision in Nashville, Tennessee, the first system to offer the event, sold over fifty percent of its subscribers for the fight.^{[citation needed]} Leonard visited Nashville to promote the fight, and the event proved such a success that Viacom themed its annual report for that year around it.^{[citation needed]} Viacom's Marketing Director was Pat Thompson who put together the fight and subsequently put together additional PPV fights, wrestling matches, and even a Broadway play.^{[citation needed]}
After leaving Viacom, Thompson became head of Sports View and produced the first pay-per-view football game on October 16, 1983, when Tennessee played Alabama from Birmingham, Alabama.^{[citation needed]} Sports View played a role in building pay-per-view networks^{[citation needed]} and became the early pioneer in developing TigerVision for LSU, TideVision for Alabama, and UT Vol Seat for Tennessee. Sports View also produced the Ohio State-Michigan Football game on PPV in November 1983.
In 1985, the first U.S. cable channels devoted to pay-per-view, Viewer's Choice, Cable Video Store, First Choice, and Request TV began operation within days of each other.^{[citation needed]} Viewer's Choice serviced both home satellite-dish and cable customers, while Request TV, though broadcasting to cable viewers, would not become available to dish-owners until the 1990s.^{[citation needed]}
First Choice PPV was available on Rogers Cablesystems in the United States and Canada. When Paragon Cablesystems acquired the Rogers Cablesystems in San Antonio, Texas First Choice continued until 1996 when Time Warner Cable bought Paragon Cablesystems in San Antonio, Texas.
The term "pay-per-view" did not come into general use until the late 1980s^{[citation needed]} when companies like iN DEMAND, HBO, and Showtime started using the system to show movies and some of their productions. In Demand would show movies, concerts, and other events, with live sporting events such as WrestleMania predominant. Prices ranging from $3.99 to $49.99, while HBO and Showtime, with their legs TVKO and SET Pay Per View, would offer championship boxing with prices ranging from $14.99 to $54.99.^{[citation needed]}
ESPN has shown college football and basketball games on pay-per-view.^{[citation needed]} The boxing undercard Latin Fury, shown on June 28, 2003, became ESPN's first boxing pay-per-view card and also the first pay-per-view boxing card held in Puerto Rico.^{[citation needed]} Pay-per-view has provided a revenue stream for professional wrestling companies like World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), Ring of Honor (ROH) and Asistencia Asesoría y Administración.
In the United States pay-per-view broadcasters transmit without advertisements, unlike almost all other broadcasters.

Brigham Young University's origin can be traced back to 1862 when a man named Warren Dusenberry started a Provo school in a prominent adobe building called Cluff Hall, which was located in the northeast corner of 200 East and 200 North.^[18] On October 16, 1875, Brigham Young, then President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, personally purchased the Lewis Building after previously hinting that a school would be built in Draper, Utah in 1867.^[19] Hence, October 16, 1875 is commonly held as BYU's founding date.^[20] Said Young about his vision: "I hope to see an Academy established in Provo... at which the children of the Latter-day Saints can receive a good education unmixed with the pernicious atheistic influences that are found in so many of the higher schools of the country."^[21]
The school broke off from the University of Deseret and became Brigham Young Academy.^[21] Classes commencing January 3, 1876. Warren Dusenberry served as interim principal of the school for several months until April 1876 when Brigham Young's choice for principal arrived—a German immigrant named Karl Maeser.^[20] The school did not become a university, however, until the end of Benjamin Cluff, Jr's term at the helm of the institution. At that time, the school was also still privately supported by members of the community and was not absorbed and sponsored officially by the LDS Church until July 18, 1896.^[22] A series of odd managerial decisions by Cluff led to his demotion; however, in his last official act, he proposed to the Board that the Academy be named "Brigham Young University". The suggestion received a large amount of opposition, many members of the Board saying that the school wasn't large enough to be a university, but the decision ultimately passed. One opponent to the decision, Anthon H. Lund, later said, "I hope their head will grow big enough for their hat."^[23]
In 1903, Brigham Young Academy was dissolved, and was replaced by two institutions: Brigham Young High School, and Brigham Young University.^[22] (The BY High School class of 1907 was ultimately responsible for the famous giant "Y" that is to this day embedded on a mountain near campus.^[22]) The Board elected George H. Brimhall as the new President of BYU. He had not received a high school education until he was forty. Nevertheless, he was an excellent orator and organizer.^[23] Under his tenure in 1904 the new Brigham Young University bought 17 acres (69,000 m²) of land from Provo called "Temple Hill".^[22] After some controversy among locals over BYU's purchase of this property, construction began in 1909 on the first building on the current campus, the Karl G. Maeser Memorial.^[24] Brimhall also presided over the University during a brief crisis involving the theory of evolution. The religious nature of the school seemed at the time to collide with this scientific theory. Joseph F. Smith, President of the Church, settled the question for a time by asking that evolution not be taught at the school. What Happened That Day
On September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93, bound for San Francisco, was scheduled to depart Newark International at 8:01 a.m. But airport construction and heavy runway traffic forced a wait of 41 minutes.
The plane did not lift off until 8:42 a.m.
News accounts and experts credit the delay as the primary reason why Fight 93 was the only one of that day’s four deadly flights to fail its appalling mission.
By the time Flight 93 was airborne, the other hijacked jets in the tightly planned attacks had already taken off and were closing in on their targets.
American Airlines Flight 11 left Boston at 7:59 and hit the north tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46. United 175 also lifted off from Boston, at 8:14, and flew into the south tower at 9:02. After taking off from Dulles at 8:20, headed for Los Angeles, American Flight 77 veered off course at 8:55. Fifteen minutes later, the plane turned back. It crashed into the west side of the Pentagon at 9:38. (All times are Eastern.)
The three initial hijackings were detected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and reported one by one to the Air Force's North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), at 8:43, 8:53 and 9:24. NORAD's order to scramble military jets out of Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts came at 8:46.
The Newark delay was critical. It put Flight 93 on an entirely different – and historic – course.
Once the four terrorists took over their plane, passengers and crew were able to phone friends, family and emergency officials to report the hijacking. During those calls, passengers learned about the horrific events in New York and in Washington. The news had already saturated the airwaves. It was clear that the attacks were coordinated and their plane was part of the plan. The realization motivated passengers and crew to band together and fight.
The courageous men and women aboard Flight 93 hatched a hasty, desperate plan to attack the terrorists and try to prevent them from hitting their selected target, probably the White House or the US Capitol.
The passenger leaders, including Tom Burnett, Mark Bingham, Todd Beamer, Jeremy Glick, and the rest of the passengers and crew, began making final, heartrending calls to say goodbye to loved ones and family. BY 9:58, most cell phone calls had ended. The frantic fight began.
At 10:06, Flight 93 crashed in a field near a wooded area in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in Somerset County, a scant 20 minutes by air from the White House. All 33 passengers and 7 crewmembers were killed. Tragically, the people on board had achieved their goal.
In all, on that dreadful, dreadful morning, only one hour and fifty-three minutes elapsed from the time the first flight was hijacked at 8:13 to the moment Flight 93 crashed.
Later, when the tapes of those indelible farewell calls were released and re-played, all of America and people around the world got to hear, firsthand, the extraordinary bravery and determination of the ordinary civilians who chose to give their lives in order to save the lives of countless others.
Daring, honorable and self-sacrificing, they are true American heroes. The story of Flight 93 is a legacy for us all.

Stoe said authorities initially insisted crash debris could not have traveled over a mountain ridge more than eight miles from the crash.
Comment: Secondary Debris floated miles away on this breeze no wind, not windy enough to active wind chimes? At the time of the crash? Debris found in water fountains? But it did not do that at the Pentagon Crash? Or other similar crashes? Get away from all this, stop banging your head against a wall. Adding a wall fountain to your garden, whether in the form of a water feature or wall fountain, can add the element of water to your backyard. The NTSB says it is not only plausible, but probable," said [FBI Agent] Crowley.

Important news...
The FBI finally allowed family members to hear the Cockpit Voice Recorder. Unfortunately, no conclusive evidence was heard by anyone. There simply is no evidence at this time that heroes ever got in the cockpit. The story hasn't changed much since the Newsweek article below outlined what the reporters did and didn't read in the transcripts.

The Fact remains that the FBI has never stated heroes were ever in the cockpit. No official ever has. If you find such a statement please email me a link.

I have to ask: Why not release the Flight Data Recorder info? There is nothing horrific on it. There is nothing there that will aid and abed terrorists. There is nothing that will jeopardize a trial. And it's data that usually gets released at some point.

It's simply data about the aircraft as it flew and crashed.

There's only one reason not to release it. Because it shows the plane depressurizing, losing an engine, flipping upside down and crashing in a way that they don't care to explain.

November 27th - The FBI recently provided a partial Cockpit Voice Recorder transcript to 3 Newsweek reporters. It appears to verify things I've been saying for 2 months, like"The Investigators are looking into the possibility that the heroes came very close to the cockpit, it is unclear that they actually reached the cockpit door." On the morning of September 11, 2001, al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners in a strategically planned attack against the United States. These terrorists intentionally flew two jet airliners into theWorld Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City and a third aircraft into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. A fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into an open field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all , and terrorists on board. The four aircraft strikes killed nearly 3,000 people, the deadliest attack on American soil by a foreign entity. This is the Flight 93 Story.
It began as just an ordinary day...
Seven crew members assigned to Flight 93 began to prepare for the early morning non-stop flight from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco, California. Thirty-three passengers were traveling for ordinary reasons. Flight 93 was a Boeing 757, with a capacity of 182 passengers. The terrorists targeted domestic flights that normally had few passengers so they would have less resistance, used the type of aircraft that they had been trained to pilot, were non-stop, coast-to-coast flights with full fuel tanks that would cause the maximum amount of destruction, and were departing at approximately the same time so they could make a coordinated, surprise attack.
The hijackers on September 11, 2001, were terrorists on a suicide mission. This was the first time hijackers used commercial airliners as weapons to destroy symbolic targets, commit mass murder, and spread terror.
On that morning, three of the four hijacked flights departed on schedule. However, Flight 93 was delayed more than 25 minutes due to typically heavy morning traffic. Just four minutes after Flight 93 departed, hijacked Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. At 9:03 a.m., a second hijacked plane, Flight 175, hit the South Tower.
At 9:37 a.m. hijacked Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. The Federal Aviation Administration, at 9:42 a.m. ordered all aircraft to land at the nearest airport at 9:42 a.m. An estimated 4,500 aircraft landed safely without incident. This was the first time such an order had been given in United States aviation history. By that time, though, Flight 93 was not responding to any orders.
"Mayday! Get out of here!"
At about 9:28 a.m., after 46 minutes of routine flight across Pennsylvania, the terrorists on Flight 93 overtook the cockpit, turning the plane southeast on a course directed toward Washington, D.C., the nation's capital. The passengers and crew were forced to the back of the plane and told to be quiet. Using airfones, passengers and crew began making calls to report the hijacking. They soon learned the shocking news about the other hijacked planes and quickly realized that Flight 93 was part of a larger attack on America. This realization led to a vote and a collective decision to fight back.
In just over 30 minutes, this diverse group of people on Flight 93 developed a plan and put it into action. captured the sounds of their struggle: shouts, screams, calls to action, and sounds of breaking glassware. To stop the uprising, the terrorist piloting the aircraft began to roll it to the left and right, and pitch the nose up and down. In its final moments, the plane turned upside down as it passed over rural Western Pennsylvania. The terrorists remained in control of the plane and chose to crash it rather than risk the passengers and crew regaining control of the aircraft.
At 10:03 a.m., Flight 93 plowed into an empty field at a speed of 563 miles per hour. Upon impact, the 7,000 gallons of jet fuel on board the aircraft exploded, creating a ball of fire that rose higher than the trees.
Quick and determined actions...
The flight data recorder that was recovered from the crash site revealed that the terrorists had reprogrammed the aircraft's autopilot system for a new destination - Washington, D.C. Recovered evidence and responses to interrogations revealed that the terrorists' intended target was most likely the United States Capitol, where the nation's legislators were in session. Flight 93 crashed only 20 minutes flying-time from Washington, D.C.
Because of the quick and determined actions of the passengers and crew, Flight 93 was the only one of the four hijacked aircraft that failed to reach the terrorists' intended target that day. The passengers and crew showed unity, courage, and defiance in the face of adversity.
Today the National Park Service, its volunteers, and its partners work to honor their sacrifice and to try to understand more fully the legacy of Flight 93 and the other events of 9/11.

Temporary Memorial - Final Closing

The Flight 93 National Memorial will close at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9 to allow for final preparations and setup for the dedication ceremony that will take place the following morning.

On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, the U.S. came under attack when four commercial airliners were hijacked and used to strike targets on the ground. Nearly 3,000 people tragically lost their lives. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard one of the planes, Flight 93, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted.

The Canadiens were founded by J. Ambrose O'Brien on December 4, 1909, as a charter member of the National Hockey Association,^[9]^[10] the forerunner to the National Hockey League. It was to be the team of the francophone community in Montreal, composed of francophone players, and under francophone ownership as soon as possible.^[11] The team's first season was not a success, as they placed last. After the first year, ownership was transferred to George Kennedy of Montreal^[12] and the team's fortunes improved over the next seasons. The team won its first Stanley Cup championship in the 1915–16 season.^[9] In 1917, with four other NHA teams, the Canadiens formed the NHL,^[9] and they won their first NHL Stanley Cup during the 1923–24 season, led by Howie Morenz. The team moved from the Mount Royal Arena to the Montreal Forum for the 1926–27 season.^[9]
In the 1930s, the club started the decade successfully with Stanley Cup wins in 1930 and 1931. However, the club and its then Montreal rival, the Montreal Maroons, declined both on the ice and economically during the Depression. Losses grew to the point where the team owners considering selling the team to Cleveland, Ohio interests. However, local investors were found and instead it was the Maroons that suspended operations, and several of the Maroons players moved to the Canadiens.
Led by the "Punch Line" of Maurice "Rocket" Richard, Toe Blake and Elmer Lach in the 1940s, the Canadiens enjoyed success again atop the NHL. From 1952 to 1960, the franchise won six Stanley Cups, including a record five straight from 1956 to 1960, with a new set of stars coming to prominence: Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Doug Harvey, Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, Jacques Plante, and Richard's younger brother, Henri.
The Canadiens added ten more championships in fifteen seasons from 1965 to 1979,^[9] with another dynastic run of four straight Cups from 1976 to 1979.^[9] In the 1976–77 season, the Canadiens set a modern-day record for fewest losses by only losing eight games in an 80-game season. The next generation of stars included Guy Lafleur, Yvan Cournoyer, Ken Dryden, Pete Mahovlich, Steve Shutt, Bob Gainey, Serge Savard, Guy Lapointe and Larry Robinson. Scotty Bowman, who would later set a record for most NHL victories by a coach, was the team's head coach for its last five Stanley Cup victories in the '70s.
The Canadiens won Stanley Cups in 1986, led by rookie star goaltender Patrick Roy,^[9] and in 1993,^[9] continuing their streak of winning at least one championship in every decade from the 1910s to the 1990s (this streak ended in the 2000s). In 1996, the Habs moved from the Montreal Forum, their home during 70 seasons and 22 Stanley Cups, to the Molson Centre (now the Bell Centre).^[9]
On December 29, 2008 the Canadiens won 5-2 over the Florida Panthers to become the first team in NHL history to reach 3,000 victories.

Illustrator Tutorial – Create a Gang of Vector Ninjas

It can be quite tricky getting the hang of Adobe Illustrator, but if you take a step back and concentrate on the basics there's a range of options for creating great looking images. In this tutorial, we'll take a look at constructing a group of cool vector ninja characters using just the basic shapes and a variety of simple tools, making it a good start for Illustrator beginners.

After opening up Adobe Illustrator, create a new document. For a fun project the size of the document doesn't matter, Illustrator has a vast area of artboard beyond the document edges that can be used. I personally use the CMYK color mode out of habit and the ease of managing blacks, but a wider range of colours are available with RGB. The choice should really depend on the final outcome of the project; print or web.

Depending whether your Illustrator software has the default settings, you might want to check the options for the scaling of strokes and effects, this little option could save you a headache layer down the line.

Grab the Circle Tool and draw a shape on the artboard, hold the SHIFT key to create a perfectly equal object. By default this will have a white fill and black stroke.

Select the Square Tool and draw another shape on the artboard, position this to overlap the original circle. Use the Align Palette to centre the two shapes horizontally.

From the same menu, use the Rounded Rectange Tool to draw a small leg. Adjust the roundness of the corners with the keyboard cursor keys until the ends are completely circular.
Zoom in and position the leg exactly in relation to the edge of the square body.

Duplicate the leg and move into position for the remaining limbs, for the arms rotate the shape by 45 degrees. To position the shapes behind the other objects, press the CTRL + [ and CTRL + ] keys repeatedly to adjust the stacking order of the selected objects.

Draw another perfect circle onto the artboard, and beside it a much larger oval. Overlap the two and use the Align Palette to position exactly.

With the two shapes selected, click the Subtract from Shape Area option from the Pathfinder palette. Click the Expand button to refresh the bounding box of the shape.
By using temporary shapes as tools along with the Pathfinder options, a range of custom objects can be created.

Position this semi-circular shape within the large circle of the character to represent the facial area. Draw in a small circle as an eye, fill this with a black swatch and clear any stroke. Copy and paste in front (CTRL + F), then move horizontally to the side (hold SHIFT to constrain the axis)
Grouping any pairs of objects, such as the eyes and arms will allow them to be centralised with the other objects using the Align Palette without being moved individually.

With the complete line-work character laid out and aligned, draw a selection around the complete object and copy and paste a duplicate. Move a copy off to the side as a backup.

With all the objects that make up the torso and limbs selected, chose the Add to Shape Area option from the Pathfinder tool and Expand to merge the shapes into one.

Fill the body elements with a very dark grey (95% black) and add a 4pt stroke aligned to the outside at 100% black.

In the Appearance Palette, click the small options arrow and select Add New Stroke.

This time, add a 4pt stroke aligned to the inside, with a lighter, 93% black. This multiple use of strokes is a technique I've come to use in my character designs which really helps lift the colours by adding a little depth and variation.

Select the facial area and fill with a pale skin tone, add a slightly thinner stroke at 3pt aligned to the outside using the 93% black.

Add a New Stroke through the Appearance Palette and give this line a slightly darker tone, aligned to the inside of the shape.

The basic version of the character is complete, ready for some stealthy ninja action.

Copy and paste multiple variations of the original line-work character. Adjust and rotate the limbs into a range of scary ninja combat positions, adjust the stacking order of the arms to in front or behind the body to give different effects.

With each individual character, repeat the process of merging shapes and colouring the objects to produce a group of cool ninjas. However, no ninja would be complete without combat accessoriesâ€¦

Create a staff using a long thin rectangle, fill the object with brown while adding a black outline.

Create a pointed object using the Star Tool, using the Direct Selection Tool select each of the points of the path from each arm of the star.

Upon selecting the Rotate Tool, the point of origin will automatically default to the centre of the object. Click and drag to adjust the overall shape of the star.

Draw a solid circle in the centre and fill the death star weapon with a metal like grey. Add a black outline and a secondary inner stroke with a slightly darker grey.

Using the same colour scheme, draw a triangle by dragging a shape with the Star Tool and pressing the downwards cursor key to reduce the number of points. Grab the upper most point with the Direct Selection Tool and drag vertically.

Select and drag the middle two points to squash the lower half into a sword like shape. Finalise this with a small brown rectangle, remember the majority of the handle would be concealed by the hand so only a small section is required.

Use the Pen Tool to neatly draw in a three sided shape to represent the chamfered finish of the sword blade.

Create two Nunchuk handles and the beginning and end points of the adjoining chain. With both chain elements selected head to Object > Blend > Make

Go back to Object > Blend > Blend Options, enter 5 under the Specified Steps option to alter the type of blend to give a line of individual items.

Use the Pen or Pencil tool to draw a temporary line to symbolise the desired route of the Nunchuk chain, with this and the blend selected, go to Object > Blend > Replace Spine.

Group each individual weapon and move into place on the various characters, completing the group making them ready for action!

And I still follow the NBA,” said El Huesito.

“I just went for it. I’d never played on a full-size pitch before and the day I went on trial at Talleres my dad said I ought to tell them I was a No10. And that’s where I stayed,” he explained, on how a player measuring in at over six foot made a niche for himself in a role normally reserved for more diminutive performers. “I like how (Juan Roman) Riquelme and Kaka play, they’re two great players. I think that my game shares some similarities with theirs, but I can’t compare myself to them – I’m only just starting out.”

That may be the case, but Pastore has made giant strides since his first-team debut for Talleres as a 17-year-old in the side’s promotion campaign under coach Ricardo Gareca. After just five appearances, however, he was on his way to join Huracan in 2007, where administrative problems and a serious ankle injury meant 2008 was a virtual write-off on the playing front.

Thus it was in the first half of 2009 that his stock really began to rise, after playing a starring role and contributing seven goals to Huracan’s eye-catching Clausura campaign, when Angel Cappa’s expansive side were pipped to the title on the final day of the season by Velez Sarsfield.

Cappa, whose CV includes spells in Spanish football working as an assistant coach to Jorge Valdano, had this to say about his former charge: “Javier is an exquisite player, and there are not many of those about. As soon as I saw him, I knew he had a brilliant career ahead of him.”

The feeling was mutual, with Pastore revealing just how Cappa’s tailored methods helped him explode on to the Argentinian scene. “Angel treated me differently to the others. He’d send them all off running while he took me to one side to talk and explain things about the game. My team-mates used to give me grief for being the coach’s favourite. I think, deep down, they were right.”

Following reported interest from European giants such as AC Milan and Chelsea, Pastore eventually made a multi-million-pound move to up-and-coming Palermo. And he has flourished on Italian soil, appearing in 23 of his new team’s 26 Serie A encounters so far, though his first goal did not come until a 4-2 defeat by Bari in late-January. It was his performance in last week’s 2-0 win at Juventus that really made people stand up and take notice, with respected daily Corriere dello Sport stating that “it was his presence, undisputed class and strategic vision that guided Palermo to victory”.

Palermo coach Delio Rossi said: “God has given him huge talent and a lot of intelligence, but he’s still young. If he listens to me he’ll be able to carve out real openings for himself." The man of the moment is taking it all in his stride, though. “The only thing that’s changed is that in Italian football I’m required to do more for the team when we don’t have the ball.”

Panel Seeks More Police Training on Sex Crimes

Responding to concerns that sexual assault complaints have been mishandled by the police in New York, a task force appointed by Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly has recommended new training protocols for officers dealing with sex crime victims.
The task force has called for a video to be shown to officers that emphasizes the Police Department’s policies mandating that crime reports be taken, and the procedures and sensitivity required in dealing with victims of sex crimes, said Paul J. Browne, the department’s chief spokesman.
The task force, which began its review in April, is also looking at specific cases to check if complaints were handled appropriately by the police. The task force is expected to meet with Mr. Kelly on Thursday to present its initial list of recommendations.
The review was prompted by complaints from sex crime victims and rape treatment counselors, who told police officials that allegations by women who went to the police had been ignored or minimized.
Like all major crimes in New York, the number of episodes classified as rape has declined significantly, down 35.7 percent from 2005 to 2009. Yet since 2005, the number of sex crimes classified as misdemeanors has risen by 6 percent.
At the same time, there has been a sharp increase in the rate at which complaints of forcible rape have been dismissed by the police as false or lacking enough evidence to take to court.
“This was just an accumulation of stories: five boroughs, over and over again,” said Harriet Lessel, executive director of the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, an advocacy group for rape crisis programs. “It was just sort of like, ‘Wow, something different is going on here.’ In terms of not taking reports, I’d have to say that this seems like the highest number that I’ve ever heard.”
One common theme among women who have come forward, according to counselors and victims interviewed by The New York Times, is that too many inquiries are being handled by inexperienced patrol officers, not detectives from the Special Victims Division, who have had specialized training in dealing with sex crime cases.
Michael J. Farrell, the Police Department’s deputy commissioner for strategic initiatives and a member of the task force, said the situation was unavoidable.
“Even though the staffing in Special Victims was increased considerably over the years, there obviously are not sufficient personnel for them to take responsibility for all sex crimes in the city,” Mr. Farrell said.
Mr. Kelly and several of his top aides met in April with rape treatment advocates, who laid out their concerns and provided examples of sexual assault cases they believed the police had mishandled.
Shortly after the meeting, Mr. Kelly impaneled the five-member task force.
In addition to Mr. Farrell, the task force consists of two former sex crime prosecutors who now work for the Police Department, the head of the department’s housing bureau, and Denise E. O’Donnell, a former state commissioner of criminal justice services.
The group has interviewed sex crime prosecutors, social workers and police investigators, and is reviewing all relevant police training as well as the staffing needs of the Special Victims Division and which cases it handles, Mr. Browne said.
Since February, police officials have been auditing several sex crime categories to check for accurate classifications, Mr. Farrell said. Of the more than 700 sex crime complaints reviewed so far, Mr. Browne said, 7 have been reclassified.
Mr. Farrell said there could be legitimate differences of opinion about how a complaint should be classified.
“We want the classification to be the crime that’s spelled out,” he said, “not to simply shift everything into a higher category in order for it to be investigated by a particular unit.”
The Times interviewed eight women in New York who said they were frustrated by how the police had responded to their complaints of being sexually assaulted. Most of the women went to the police and the hospital within days of the attacks. But the circumstances of their cases did not make the facts easy to classify: Most knew the men they said had attacked them; two had spotty recollections of the episodes; some were drinking; and few had witnesses or glaring injuries to corroborate their assertions.
“Those are the realistic dynamics of sexual assault, but they’re actually looked at as red flags to not believe the victim,” said Joanne Archambault, the executive director of End Violence Against Women International.
Although there are techniques to resolve questions about the circumstances, experts said untrained officers might think they were signs of a weak case and then prematurely dismiss a complaint.
Several counselors who have sat with victims while they spoke to the police said inappropriate questions were common: Why didn’t you scream or call for help during the attack? When was the last time you used drugs? Are you just trying to get revenge because he does not like you? Do you pick up guys often?
Susan Xenarios, director of the Crime Victims Treatment Center at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, said, “If I walk into a precinct and if I am disregarded or criticized or told this isn’t a rape because I don’t have any memory, I’m never going to go to anyone.”
Debbie Nathan of Manhattan was not pleased with how the police initially classified her case.
Ms. Nathan, 59, recalled walking in Inwood Hill Park on a wet, chilly February afternoon when a man grabbed her from behind. He dragged her into a wooded area and said he wanted to have sex with her.
The man rubbed his pelvis against her, his arms still wrapped tightly around her torso, she said. Then he let out a groan and ran off.
She said she called 911 three times before the police arrived, about two hours after her first call. The officers seemed ill-equipped to handle a sex crime complaint; they showed little compassion or knowledge about what questions to ask, she said.
After several police supervisors showed up at her apartment to follow up, and stepped out repeatedly, apparently to call a detective from the Special Victims Division to consult, they told her that they had been instructed to classify the complaint as forcible touching, a misdemeanor.
Then Ms. Nathan, a freelance journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, went on the offensive. The day after she was attacked, she posted a message about it and the police response on a community blog, she said. Adriano Espaillat, the state assemblyman for the area, said that after he heard Ms. Nathan’s story, he had members of his staff call the police because “it seemed to me obvious that this should have been classified as a higher crime.”
The police eventually upgraded the attack from forcible touching, which has a maximum sentence of a year in jail, to first-degree attempted rape, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Later Ms. Nathan got a copy of the original police report and saw that it had omitted crucial details that would make it easier to prosecute her attacker if he were caught.
“I just hit the ceiling,” she said.
She said that the detective assigned to her case and Lisa Friel, the sex crimes chief in the Manhattan district attorney’s office, both told her that the attack should initially have been classified as an attempted rape. Ms. Nathan said Ms. Friel also told her that she was not surprised by the lower classification — that the same thing was happening to many other women.
At a community forum days after Ms. Nathan was attacked, Deputy Inspector Andrew Capul, who was then the commander of the 34th Precinct, which includes Inwood Hill Park, apologized for the handling of her case.
“There absolutely were some breakdowns in communication, and those things should not have happened,” he said, according to a videotape of the forum posted online. “We hope they never happen again. Some people may be reprimanded as a result of not following through properly in this matter.”
The Manhattan district attorney’s office would not comment on Ms. Nathan’s case.
But Cyrus R. Vance Jr., the district attorney, said in a statement that he believed that the police commissioner’s task force was a positive step toward improving “the overall responsiveness to sexual assault victims.”

What that explosion-proof 'label' really means

Who decides these things and what are their credentials?
We take a close look at the whole labeling process
LABELS ON FOODS, SPELLING OUT THE NUTRItional ingredients; labels on pesticides, spray cans, and fertilizers warning of hazardous contents or threats to the environment-we're all growing ever more accustomed to product labeling assurances of just what we are (or are not) getting.
For electric motors, the marking we're used to is the "UL label," certifying that Underwriters Laboratories has found such a motor safe for use in a particular environment. But why UL? And just what does the certification mean?
For motors, the only safety labeling issue concerns the risk of fire or explosion originating with the motor and spreading to its surroundings. The nature of those surroundings is not defined by UL, but by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in its Standard No. 70, the National Electrical Code. The language of the Code needs to be clearly understood.
First, in Article 100, the Code offers this general definition of "explosion-proof apparatus": "Apparatus enclosed in a case that is capable of withstanding an explosion of a specific gas or vapor that may occur within it and of preventing the ignition of a specified gas or vapor surrounding the enclosure by sparks, flashes, or explosion of the gas or vapor within, and that operates at such an external temperature that a surrounding flammable atmosphere will not be ignited thereby."
Note that the Code definition does not require the apparatus to be designed so that an internal explosion cannot occur. The only requirement is that any such explosion be confined to the apparatus interior.
Second, Article 500 of the Code defines specific environments as follows:
* Class I: environments containing flammable gases or vapors.
* Class II: environments containing combustible dusts.
* Class III: environments containing "easily ignitible fibers or flyings."
Within Classes I and II are several "groups" of materials having similar characteristics. For example, under Class I are Groups A (acetylene); B (predominantly hydrogen); C (ethyl ether or ethylene); and D (gasoline, acetone, ammonia, butane, methane, natural gas, etc.). Under Class II we find Groups E (combustible metal dusts); F (carbonaceous materials such as carbon black or coal); and G (other dusts such as flour, wood, and plastic).
"Explosion" versus "dust-ignition" proof
Strictly speaking, an electric motor is considered "explosion-proof' (to use the NEMA standard term rather than the Code wording) only when designed for a Class I location. A motor for Class II area service is considered "dust-ignitionproof." In ratings up to at least 500 hp, motor construction is basically the same for either type of service. But that is only because of convenience in design and manufacture, not because the requirements are identical.
Because Class III applications are found almost entirely in the textile industry, which is a limited market, we will confine our attention here to the far more widely-encountered Classes I and II. Each is divided by Code Article 500 into two main subdivisions: Division 1 and Division 2 (or "Div 2" in the commonly used chemical industry shorthand term).
Here is where many misunderstandings have arisen. In a Division 1 location, a motor must be built-and labeledas "explosion-proof." Here's the reason: for a Class I environment, the NEC defines Division 1 as ". . . a location. . in which ignitible concentrations of flammable gases or vapors can exist under normal operating conditions; or . . . in which . . . [such concentrations]. . may exist frequently because of repair or maintenance operations or because of leakage; or . . . in which breakdown or faulty operation of equipment or processes might release ignitible concentrations . . . and might also cause simultaneous failure of electric equipment."
That's quite a mouthful. Obviously, it's subject to a lot of interpretation. How often is "frequently"? What are "normal" operating conditions? (For motors, the Code seems to answer that last question in Section 500-3(c), which states: "Unless otherwise specified, normal operating conditions for motors shall be assumed to be rated full-load steady conditions." But is starting a motor really "abnormal"? And what does "otherwise specified" mean?)
However, neither the motor supplier nor the equipment user makes the choice of whether or not the area is properly considered Division 1. That's up to the AHJ-"the Authority Having Jurisdiction" over Code enforcement. The AHJ may be a local or state Fire Marshal, an electrical or building inspector, or an insurance agent. Other industry standards and publications offer guidelines for "area classification," a subject that need not concern us here.
Once the decision is made, the Code simply says that "explosion-proof apparatus," as defined earlier, is a "protection technique" applicable to "Class I, Division 1 and 2 locations." That implies an "explosion-proof" motor as appropriate in a "Div 2" area-and we'll return to that subject a bit later. The NEC is silent concerning the manner in which a motor is rendered suitable for a specific hazardous area, saying only that the apparatus must be "approved" for the service.
How a motor is to be rendered "explosion-proof" is not dealt with in NEMA Standards MGI, either. But to safely confine an internal explosion, which could initiate with an arc associated with insulation failure, a motor must have a certain level of frame strength; the hardware holding the parts together must not fail; and the joints between parts, as well as the necessary clearance around the shaft passing through bearing assemblies, must not permit escape to the outside atmosphere of any flame or hot gas that could ignite that atmosphere.
Origin of the label
Many years ago, UL established a motor test program to verify that capability for any motor manufacturer. A satisfactory product was then entitled to be labeled for the application. The "label" is a UL nameplate attesting to the Class and Group appropriate to the atmosphere for which the design is acceptable.
Is every motor built subjected to such testing? No. Once the prototype has been approved, UL sets up a "Label Service Procedure" to monitor production of the design at specific plants and periodically sends out inspectors to see that no changes have been made. Each label used must be accounted for. Each is coded to indicate what specific factory produced the motor.
To maintain the motor's integrity in service, any repairs to the unit must follow the UL "Repair and Relisting Procedure," subscribed to by many apparatus service centers, which involves its own written procedures and surveillance. Otherwise, the label is considered void even though it remains in place on the motor.
That's because any construction changes can compromise enclosure integrity-substituting low-strength bolts; drilling holes to mount identification plates; changing a bearing seal; even tool marks or burrs on machined surfaces at assembly joints, or in seal fits.
In addition to adequate strength and "flame sealing," the temperature of any external surface of a Class I Division 1 motor exposed to the environment must not exceed 80% of the ignition temperature of the gas or vapor involved. But what temperature is that? The Code requires, in Section 500-3(d), that the motor nameplate carry an "Identification Number" expressing the maximum surface temperature within which the motor will operate under those "normal conditions." Given in Code Table 500-3(d), those codes range from T1 (meaning maximum surface temperature of 450 deg C) to T6 (denoting 85 deg C).
Groups C and D, for which Division 1 motors are most commonly labeled, include a large number of gases and vapors belonging to various chemical families. Although NFPA Standard 325M lists ignition temperatures of many such materials, more are being developed all the time. The numbers show wide variation. For example, acetone at 869 deg F; ammonia at 1204 deg ; benzene at 1040; and hexane at 437 all fall within Class I Group D. The user and the AHJ must work together to determine that the temperature identification code on the nameplate for the proposed motor is compatible with the ignition temperature of the actual atmosphere to be encountered.
In the lower horsepower ratings, most motors are "duallabeled"designed and approved for both Class I (usually Group D) and Class II (Groups F and G most often). Although Class II service does not involve confining an internal explosion, because no gas or vapor is present, the bearing assemblies must still be sealed to keep out dust that could contaminate the lubricant. As the grease hardens, the bearing begins to overheat, accelerating the process of lubricant deterioration. Grain explosions
In a grain handling facility, the results are often catastrophic. Explosions in grain dust killed 75 persons in Japan between 1962 and 1975; Britain suffered 20 major losses in one year alone. During 1977, four grain elevator explosions in the U.S. took 55 lives.
That emphasizes the importance of bearing and seal maintenance for labeled Class II motors. Surface cleaning and winding thermostats can eliminate winding and frame overheating, but won't help the bearings.
Suppose the AHJ concludes that the location is not a Division 1 area? Here's how the NEC defines Division 2 (for Class I atmospheres): ". . . a location . . . in which volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases are handled, processed, or used, but in which . . . [they] . . . will normally be confined within closed containers or closed systems from which they can escape only in case of accidental rupture or breakdown of such containers or systems, or in case of abnormal operation of equipment; or . . . in which ignitible concentrations. . . are normally prevented by positive mechanical ventilation, and which might become hazardous through failure or abnormal operation of the ventilating equipment; or . . . that is adjacent to a Class I, Division 1 location, and to which ignitible concentrations. . might occasionally be communicated unless such communication is prevented by adequate positive-pressure ventilation from a source of clean air, and effective safeguards against ventilation failure are provided."
That's an even bigger mouthful-one that has caused a great deal of controversy. We usually sum up the distinction between Divisions 1 and 2 by simply saying, "In Division 1 the hazard can be expected to be present any time; in Division 2 it's present only when something goes wrong." But careful reading of the Code indicates that this is an oversimplification. Words like "normally," "effective," or "occasionally" can be subjectively interpreted.
Nevertheless, the most common view is that in a Class I Division 2 atmosphere a motor need not be explosion-proof. For official guidance, we must turn to Section 501-8 of the NEC. There, the Code specifically allows the use of motors in "open" enclosures-provided the design does not include "brushes, switching mechanisms, or similar arc-producing devices." In addition, the exposed surfaces of space heaters must not reach temperatures above 80% of the ignition temperature of the gas or vapor involved.
What about the temperatures attained by the electrical parts of the motor itself? In a "Fine Print Note," the Code says only that "It is important to consider" those temperatures.
That has been one of the causes of concern about use of any open motor in "Div 2" areas. Because of uncertainty concerning the risk of ignition, many motor users have standardized on labeled explosion-proof motors even in Division 2 locations. That position has been supported by NEMA MG2, the "Safety Standard for Construction and Guide for Selection, Installation, and Use of Electric Motors and Generators."
In Para. 3.5, that document says this: ". . . the user has two possibilities when selecting a motor for Class I, Division 2 applications. The recommended approach. . . is to select an explosion-proof motor, which in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories Inc. requirements, shall not exceed the specified external surface temperature under any operating condition. As an alternative, the user may select an open or non-explosion-proof enclosed motor for submission to the local authority for approval . . . the user should consider the temperature of external and internal surfaces of the motor to which the surrounding atmosphere has access."
What's wrong with that statement? That phrase "under any operating condition." As we have already seen, the surface temperature limitation applies only under "normal operating conditions," not under "any operating condition." Moreover, that vague exhortation to "consider" surface temperatures of a non-explosion-proof motor is of negligible value.
Motor temperature
Of greatest concern in application of non-explosion-proof motors to Class I Division 2 service is the surface temperature of the rotor. During those Code-defined "normal running conditions," rotor and stator surface temperatures are about the same (although no extensive body of data shows precise relationships).

We know, however, that during starting-particularly of a high inertia or high torque load-rotor bars and end rings may get much hotter than the stator. Typical design limits for bar temperature are 300 deg C to 400 deg C. Yes, the Code considers starting (or even service factor overload) to be "abnormal." But NEMA standards define ranges of allowable starting frequency; "severe starts" are far from uncommon in motor usage, no matter how "abnormal" the Code may consider them; and no motor can reach "normal running conditions" without first having been started. Ignoring the high rotor temperature resulting from acceleration hardly seems realistic, even though the Code may not be violated.
If the motor is built and labeled as explosion-proof, for Division 1 use, the rotor temperature can be ignored. If it does rise high enough to cause an internal explosion, the motor construction will confine that to the interior. But if the motor is not explosion-proof-and especially if it is of open construction-a high rotor surface temperature is dangerous. European standards require testing to show that such temperatures don't exceed safe limits during starting or stalling. That's not part of U.S. practice.
Because a hazard can therefore exist despite full compliance with the NEC, engineers have come to accept this truth, from a 1994 IEEE paper on Division 2 applications: "Good experience based on present practice is not sufficient. Sound engineering judgment is required in selecting and applying motors in Class I, Division 2 locations?"
Recognizing the uncertainties involved in that process, UL attempted to develop a standard for this application a decade ago. When the proposed document (UL 1836) was reviewed by the IEEE Petroleum & Chemical Industry Committee, however, numerous deficiencies were pointed out. A few examples: Motor ambient temperature was limited to -13oF-unrealistic in the northern U.S.; resistive devices such as space heaters were required to be of Division 1 construction, a requirement not in the NEC (such devices are not normally available anyway); the usual 90 deg rotation capability of motor terminal boxes appeared to be prohibited.
The upshot was that UL 1836 was withdrawn from consideration without being published. In 1993, however, UL began looking at the Division 2 issue again, primarily from the rotor surface temperature standpoint. With the widespread use of adjustable-speed drives (ASDs), a motor's "normal running conditions" now include many instances of possibly high surface temperatures caused by low speed and harmonic currents. The values will depend upon the nature of the inverter used, and the way the drive is used. No easy solution to this problem has appeared because of the wide variation in those conditions.
Nevertheless, the NEC does not impose limits on internal (stator or rotor) surface temperatures for an open motor in a Division 2 area. A hazard could exist as a result, and that has been widely recognized by petrochemical engineers within the IEEE, which has set up a Working Group to develop its own standard, No. 1349, under development for several years now, to be titled "Guide for Application of Electric Motors in Class I Division 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations."
Extensive motor testing is under way to establish a firmer basis for application than existed for UL 1836. Although much work remains to be done, one of the conclusions thus far is that ignition temperature of a gas or vapor in motion, within a running motor, may be as much as 200 deg C higher than with the gas at rest in a lab sample. "Movement inhibits ignition," and such movement exists by definition when the NEC's "normal running conditions" are present. Requirements for TEFC motors may well differ from those for open machines. Diffusion of the potentially hazardous atmosphere into-and out of-an idle motor is being examined in detail.
So, will you be finding UL labels on Division 2 motors? Certainly not soon. If the motor is labeled for Division 1, of course, it's automatically suitable for Division 2. But the reverse will not be true.
For Class II service (not to be considered in IEEE 1349), the problem becomes still more complex. Dust can readily accumulate on the stator windings of an open machine. That can create a hazard in two ways. First, the dust blanket can interfere with heat dissipation such that the winding burns out, leading directly to fire or explosion that immediately involves the surrounding atmosphere. Second, the dust can create surface tracking paths, leading to local arcing that produces the same result. If, however, the motor is totallyenclosed (even though not of dust-ignition-proof design), internal dust accumulation isn't a problem. Rotor overheating caused by dust buildup isn't likely for any type of motor enclosure.
A difficulty with Class II areas is that the dust present may be a material that is not ordinarily combustible. Hydrocarbon gases and vapors are recognized as fire or explosion hazards even by those untrained in fire protection. But starch, sugar, flour, and many other materials never used as fuels or solvents are seldom thought of as an explosion hazard.
A good example is ammonium nitrate, a common fertilizer. Here's a complaint submitted to an electrical trade magazine by a designer of industrial facilities: "Over the years. . . we have always used TEFC motors. . . in our fertilizer blending plant construction .... These plants blend potash, ammonium nitrate and other inert materials. The dusts produced by these operations. . . are not of an explosive or combustible nature. But a local electrical inspector recently stated that the equipment in such plants should be Class II, Group G rated.... We do not agree. ..."
Ammonium nitrate "inert" and "not of an explosive or combustible nature"? In 1947, explosion of two shiploads of ammonium nitrate leveled most of Texas City, killing 468 persons and causing $50 million in damage. An NFPA staff member has commented that "it is especially dangerous to permit contamination of ammonium nitrate with oil," which can certainly happen if the material is used around motors lacking proper bearing seals. The effect of such a mixture was thoroughly demonstrated in the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995.
In finely powdered form, many other ordinary or "nonflammable" materials become deadly explosives, not only more powerful than dynamite but far less predictable. A chewing gum factory in New York was blown apart by explosion of magnesium stearate dust used as a non-stick coating on the gum; six workers died. Cause of the blast was machinery failure leading to high vibration, followed by a bearing/shaft failure producing friction sparks.
Resist any temptation, then, to cut corners by assuming that a dusty atmosphere should be safe just because you aren't aware of any particular hazard involved with the material. And beware of anyone in plant operations who says "it's OK" to put an unlabeled motor in place of an explosion-proof unit, even temporarily. Don't listen when you're told that some other motor is "just as good, but doesn't happen to have a UL label."
Is UL the only agency that can certify motor safety in hazardous areas? What about Factory Mutual, or some other organization? Since 1973, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been empowered to adopt suitable product-certification procedures as adjuncts to workplace safety. That has resulted in an OSHA program to accredit "nationally recognized testing laboratories" or NRTLs, permitted to certify product safety.
Several other certifying or testing agencies have since been recognized as NRTLs and have begun listing products formerly certified only by UL. Often, however, the certification standards-the design/test criteria-have remained those of UL, as being "the only game in town."
User specifications still sometimes call for motors to meet the requirements of the "NBFU"-the National Board of Fire Underwriters. That body went out of existence more than 30 years ago, merged into the American Insurance Association and later becoming the Insurance Services Office, which rates municipal fire protection agencies and has nothing to do with electrical equipment or hazardous areas of application.
As far as motors are concerned, then, the "UL label" remains the basic sign of hazardous area acceptance. If another agency tests or certifies a motor, the procedures will probably continue to be those first arrived at by UL testing. In any event, the motor user must satisfy the AHJ first.

Sexy and smart: one sector that won't be left behind: Japan's massive sex industry has shifted from bricks-and-mortar deflation to Internet elation - Industry Overview

LIKE IT OR LOATHE it, the sex industry in Japan is big business. And despite the rickety economy, it's getting bigger. A recent survey by Takashi Kadokura, an economist with Daiichi Life Research Institute Inc., found that the Japanese market for what is rather quaintly called the entertainment trade fuzoku sangyo, swelled to a tumescent [yen] 2.37 trillion in fiscal 2001, up from [yen] 1.7 trillion a decade earlier.
This figure does not include "virtual sex"--Japan's huge sales of adult magazines, rentals and sales of porn videos and DVDs and the burgeoning market for Internet porn. And let's not forget receipts from the country's 40,000-odd love hotels.
Put together, the buying and selling of sex and related services in the world's second largest economy is worth more than the GDP of many smaller countries.
As the sex business expands along with the service sector it becomes increasingly integrated into the mainstream economy, earning billions for blue-chip firms like NTT and increasingly becoming a source of direct and indirect tax revenue for the government.
Why does this industry seem immune to the problems that have kept Japan on the economic disaster pages of the world's newspapers for over a decade? The truth is: It isn't.
As a stroll around the licentious pink heart of Tokyo's sex industry, Kabukicho, or the "soaplands" district of Yoshiwara confirms, many operators of sex clubs and massage parlors have resorted to the same deflationary price-cutting approaches practiced by other businesses.
More noticeable than the stagnation and decline of some areas of the sex trade, however, are the vitality and innovation that characterize the industry as a whole. Despite its murky image and legal problems, thousands of new businesses have sprung up in the last five years, offering all the eye popping lechery that money can buy.

The older ranks of industry veterans have been swelled by thousands of younger entrepreneurs and casualties from the mainstream economy who are transforming the selling of sex using new technology. Many of them are voraciously ambitious.
Some commentators are now using the once grubby sex trade as a stick to poke in the eye of Japan's arthritic political class. As Dacapo weekly magazine declared in May of this year: "Structural reform has been progressing rapidly in this [sex] industry exactly because the reform-driver has not been Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's administration. If he wants to know what reform is about, this is where he should be looking."
Winners and Losers
So who are the winners and losers in Japan's sex services industry? At the top of the list of losers are brick-and-mortar businesses like brothels, soaplands and strip clubs, which have seen collective revenues slump by over a third since the mid 80s, says Kadokura.
Stuck with high overheads (particularly for utilities), prices in these outlets are mostly fixed and are driving away male clientele, who have less disposable income than in the past. The price of a single visit to a soapland outlet (staffed by naked prostitutes offering soapy massages) is about [yen] 60,000--a price that is out of reach for most salarymen.
Strip clubs too are seen as expensive and old hat, and many exotic dancers are under pressure to broaden their appeal, says Tomomi Sawaguchi, who recently formed Japan's first union for sex workers. "The number of customers has fallen, so managers will ask some women to perform extra services on the cheap. I've seen foreign women having sex for as little as [yen] 1,000."
Rushing to fill the gap are the thousands of "fashion (sex) massage" outlets that sprang up nationwide in the 90s. With faster turnaround and cheaper labor costs (many are run and staffed by heavily exploited foreign workers), they offer sessions for as little as [yen] 10,000--keeping their services within range of the average male worker.
Sex message joins an increasingly long list of exotically titled innovations including imekura (image clubs), sumata (crotch play--an everything-but sex service designed to get around regulations banning intercourse in outlets) and "delivery health," or deliheru, a pizza-like business that dispatches a prostitute directly to your door for about [yen] 20,000 to [yen] 30,000.
"The life span of popular services used to be 22 years in the high economic growth era, but now it's less than three years," says analyst Takuro Morinaga of UFJ Research. "Firms are working harder to come up with innovations designed to add value to their services."
Many of these services flirt with the limits of the law and exploit mobile phone technology to do it. Prostitution, for example, is prohibited under the Prostitution Prevention Law of 1956, helping to explain the huge growth of delivery health. Now a [yen] 461 billion annual business, says Kadokura, delivery health firms hook up working women with paying men by advertising on utility poles in most city neighbor hoods, using only a keitai number. What happens next takes place in the privacy of the client's home and is therefore out of reach of the law.

Many of the women have never met the people they work for. "They call me on my keitai, I get picked up by a driver and delivered to the client's house," says 26-year-old Jun, who works in the Hachioji area. "Afterwards I send them their cut by bank transfer and pocket the rest."
With operating as easy as that, the delivery health business has attracted thousands of budding entrepreneurs. Under the revised Entertainment Establishment Control Law of April 1999, companies must register these services, which provides some idea of how fast they have grown. National Police Agency figures show the number of businesses that "send out female companions" soared from 2,684 in 1999 to 12,251 by the end of 2002.
The sex business has also been a boon to cable, satellite and telecom companies. Consider the fee a mobile phone company pockets every time a user finds his way to a telephone sex business, which often advertises with mass calls to thousands of numbers. The female operators of de-ai businesses are then paid by the minute to keep men on the other end of the line, often by hinting at the possibility of sex.
"I worked in a nice, clean office in Shibuya. Everyone looked like salarymen and office ladies," says Narumi, who spent a year temping at a de-ai firm. "My job was to get men to talk for as long as I could by playing along with their fantasies. Sometimes they ran up bills of [yen] 10,000 to [yen] 20,000."
Other sex services such as telephone clubs terikura and even enjo kosai (or compensated dating) also rake in billions of yen for the telecom firms.
Official data on this sort of business is hard to come by, but in 2001 DoCoMo said that revenue from "non-official sites" was [yen] 250 million--practically all derived from adult and de-ai sites, according to Giles Richter of Mobile Media Japan.
Satellite companies and cable firms, many of which are involved with local governments, are reluctant to divulge revenues from porn, but content and equipment providers say it is significant. "They might not tell you, but people in the industry recognize that the real profits initially are in adult content," says Lincoln Owens, who is director of Asia-Pacific sales at SeaChange International Inc., the largest seller of video servers in the world.
"Pay-TV firms became big in the US by selling adult TV to hotels and other outlets, and they're now tire front-runners in cable. In Japan, one of the few cable and broadband content providers able to make money has 40,000 subscribers to streaming porn, and half the content on pay-per-view satellite is adult."
The impact of the Net
The other big losers in the recession have been adult content publishers and videogaphers. Sales of glossy adult magazines have been in steep decline for some time, falling by over 15 percent last year alone, according to the All Japan Magazine and Book Publisher's and Editor's Association.
Apart from the ever-shrinking average male budget, the main culprit is the Internet, which not only offers billions of free bytes for the curious surfer but often comes uncensored, a novelty for many in Japan where a mosaic-like effect called bokashi blocks out the sex organs.
"The Net has hit us hard," says Go Wada, editor of an adult magazine with Tatsumi Press in Tokyo. "Older guys have stayed with us but the youngsters have all drifted off to cyberspace."
Hiroyuki Tsunoda, president of one of Japan's biggest adult entertainment firms, Media Station Co. Ltd., which releases 15 titles a month under the brand Uchu Keikaku, also admits Net freebies have taken a big chunk out of his business, along with mobile phones, which have eaten up the disposable income of younger customers. "People have a lot more options now, and they can look at uncensored porn from US servers. We estimate video rentals are down by half compared to what they were 10 years ago."
These difficulties bring a rare industry call for government help from Tsunoda. "The government should be doing more to stop uncensored material," he says. "They should realize that this is just another industry and that illegal porn from abroad is hurting us."
Other industry insiders, however, such as Ganri Takahashi of Soft On Demand, say the problem is not falling demand but the failure of firms like Media Station to change quickly enough. "There has been an explosion in the number of genres, so it's no good just churning out the cute-girl-older-guy formula," he says. "If the industry offers imaginative quality products, customers will stay with us."
Most large adult video makers are dealing with the threat from cyberspace by moving online themselves. Media Station's Tsunoda says that about 7 percent of the firm's income currently comes from the Net, and this is likely to grow. "Profit is high because we've already shot the movie. Internet sales are an extra."
Machiki Katsumi of V&R Planning Co. Ltd., another large erotic-video maker, agrees. "About ten percent of our income now comes from the Internet, but there's no question that this will be a crucial part of this business in the near future, once people discover how to make real money from it. The problem at the moment is people will not yet pay for something they can get for free."
The Internet is only one of a raft of new delivery methods that is transforming the industry and leaving video in the technological dustbin. Most adult firms are phasing out VHS for DVD, and many sell directly to satellite and cable companies. All agree that broadband will be hugely important for the industry.
"Until now, people who consumed porn had to find somewhere to keep it," says V&R's Katsumi. "Most didn't want wives or children to find it. The Internet conveniently solved this problem because you don't have an actual product lying around anywhere. Once the quality improves, and it takes less time to access and download the stuff, it will take off."

Ganari Takahashi is the telegenic president of Soft on Demand, one of Japan's fastest growing porn companies. Now in its eighth year of business, SOD has grown from a company with six employees to a staff of 180 and profits of [yen] 1.5 billion on sales of [yen] 7.8 billion. SOD currently releases 1,000 titles on DVD and video a year. You might think Takahashi would be happy, but far from it. Takahashi wants to destroy the competition, transform adult entertainment in Japan into a mainstream business, open up the market for women and become the "McDonald's of adult entertainment."
JI: HOW'S BUSINESS?
GT: Great. We're aiming for market share by dropping prices, increasing our titles and smashing our rivals--it's the McDonald's formula. Years ago there were about 400 car markers in Japan. Now all that's left is Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Mazda. There are currently about 1,000 adult-film companies. I'd like to make this into 100. The remaining 900 release garbage and fool customers.
We should be aiming higher in this industry. Look at Titanic. It cost $2 billion, but you could buy the video for [yen] 3,000. Why should adult videos, which are much cheaper to make, cost [yen] 4,000! We aim to make high-quality products and sell to a much bigger market, allowing us to cut costs and still make expensive products. Even after paying taxes we're still left with over [yen] 700 or [yen] 800 million in profits--that gives us the power to remove the small makers and sellers. That's our strategy.
JI: Those are ambitious plans. How will you achieve them?
GT: We want to create a relationship of trust between adult entertainment and its customers. Right now, guys buy three videos in the hope that one will be good. I want to become the Sony of adult entertainment, a byword for quality. People should rely on us.
I also want to sell to women. We need to create outlets where women won't feel embarrassed about buying porn. If we create an industry like Universal Pictures with big stars, women will definitely buy.
We have to create an industry where people are not just viewing adult material furtively in their rooms but where customers, women included, regularly buy our products. We should sell in convenience stores. If we stay hidden we'll never become part of mainstream culture, but if we make it a cool industry with attractive stars all out in the open, women will come to us. Japanese women don't think for themselves; they change their opinions based on what everyone around them is thinking.
JI: How about investment?
GT: I want to list the firm, but the nature of our business causes problems. The stock market authorities wanted us to cut our adult products to under 20 percent. They eventually agreed to 50 percent, but I don't think there's anything wrong with adult entertainment so I told them no and that's where it stands. We're now thinking of the Nasdaq. Within two or three years, I think we'll have a good chance of listing.
JI: Has the recession had an impact on business?
GT: We're like Eskimos. In Hawaii, if the temperature drops 10 degrees people complain that the weather is freezing. But native Alaskans are used to the cold. In this industry, we've always been out in the cold, so we have no expectations that the economy is going to get better or worse, or that the government is going to help us out.
People who would never think of doing something like this if the economy were good are coming into the business--I know because I'm one of them. If I had succeeded elsewhere, I wouldn't have started making adult videos.
That said, the recession and the rush of people into the business are helping to slash prices. Seven years ago the retail price of an average adult video was about [yen] 10,000. Now it's down to about [yen] 2,500. The cost of making a video seven years ago was about [yen] 2 million, now it's about [yen] 5.5 million.
JI: Is it easy to find "talent" for your products?
GT: Yes, and it's getting easier, because the morals of Japanese women are falling. There used to be an education system here that taught women that this sort of thing was wrong.
JI: Do you take any responsibility for this?
GT: We're all to blame, yes. Parents are teaching their children the wrong values. We lost the war to America and now we are losing to American values. Have fun whatever else you do--that idea comes from America, and that's why the number of hedonists is on the rise in this country. I would like to return Japan to its Bushido past, when people worked not for themselves but for their country, their firm, their family and parents. That was the Bushido idea.
JI: Do you have plans to sell abroad?
GT: We're already started to sell in the US. We set up a company there three years ago and we're sending two people over there this year as staffers. Americans are used to straight intercourse--just like their steaks, big and bland. I want to sell them high-quality Kobe Beef. American porn goes straight from the screen to the crotch. We stimulate the imagination. This may not work in Texas, but we'll start in white collar areas like San Francisco and New York.
JI: What has been the impact of technology on this business?
GT: The best thing about the last five years is Digital Video Discs. DVD currently accounts for about 70 or 80 percent of our products. In two years VHS will be gone. DVD is cheaper to mass produce. A 180-minute VHS tape that used to cost [yen] 500 can be made on DVD for about [yen] 250 and even [yen] 200. The discs are smaller than tapes so you can store them, they're better quality, and you can put lots of extras on them. The viewer can become the director, so men with fetishes will be able to focus on breasts or other parts of the body.
So far, the Internet has had little impact on us because the quality is bad. You can see naked women all over the place now, so people are searching for quality sex products. But it will become important, there's no doubt about that. We're looking now at the costs of broadband. We reckon we can deliver adult movies directly to homes for [yen] 2,500 a pop.
JI: What do you say to people who hate this industry?
GT: I think we have to make people trust this industry. People who work in adult video have very loose morals, to tell you the truth. They have affairs, multiple sex partners. I don't. I'm married with kids. None of my managers interfere with the women. If we show people we're serious like this we'll be accepted. And if we make money we'll give some of it away to charities.
We also have to pay taxes, lots of taxes! This will be our biggest contribution, I think. The problem is people in this industry are afraid of the authorities, which is why they stay in the shadows. If the cops stop us, this industry will go back to the dark ages.

Rio Yasuda is what they call a hamedori, or a one-man porn director, one of hundreds that supply the voracious porn industry with material. Yasuda writes and edits stories and shoots and acts in his own videos before selling them to magazines, satellite companies like SkyPerfecTV and Paradise TV and, increasingly, Webcasters. The 35-year-old does three shoots a week with women hired from modeling agencies, a job he claims is not as easy as it looks. "I can't to do it anymore without Viagra, and it blocks my nose, makes my heart go too fast and gives me a headache." The compensation is revenue of [yen] 1.2 million a month, about half of which comes from growing Internet sales.
FOR ME, AT LEAST, adult magazines are stuck in the past. They're in terrible shape. People can find free porn photographs on the Net so they wonder why they should pay for it. The only adult publications that are selling well now are weekly-type magazines called jitsuwa, or true-life stories, which are actually full of lies. But they sell for about [yen] 300 to [yen] 400, cheaper than glossy magazines, and they're quite full of material so they're good value for money.
The influence of convenience stores is also very important for magazine sales. You used to be able to get adult publications in small book stores, but they're all nearly gone now and the bigger stores won't stock them. That leaves the family stores. but they're really strict about what they sell and they are really powerful now.
Adult video is a little better because most have long term relationships with retailers for a certain number of releases, and this hasn't really changed. But the Internet will definitely hurt video sales too.
I'm focusing on the Net, on Web streaming. I make half my income from Net sales now, and it's growing. Most Net firms still can't make money, but they will someday. Credit card sales will become more popular. Magazines won't die, but they will become a niche industry. The bigger picture is that there will just be so much more of this stuff around, the market will get much tougher.
The porn satellite boss
Porn barons probably don't get more affable than Michiyuki Matsunaga, the 56-year-old president of 24-hour sex channel Paradise TV. A self-confessed family man, Matsunaga positions photos of his children and grandchildren on his office desk beside images of his company's Bacchanalian shenanigans in the four-story building that houses his company in West ShinjuKu.

An award-winning documentary filmmaker before trying his hand with satellite porn after the airwaves were liberalized in the late 90s, Matsunaga now claims revenue of over [yen] 100 million a month in subscription fees from cable and satellite operators and love hotels in Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii and elsewhere.
During our interview a television monitor in the corner of the room shows a semi-naked woman pottering around her small apartment "somewhere in Tokyo." "She's an ordinary housewife," says Matsunaga. "We pay her [yen] 30,000 to [yen] 40,000 a day to have a fixed camera on her all the time.
"I worked in the sales department of a company called Tsuburaya (makers of Ultraman) for 10 years. When I was there I learned that the big issue was copyright. You could merchandize Ultraman all over the place, sell abroad, repeat broadcast. They haven't made Ultraman in years, but it still makes money.
"When the broadcast market was deregulated I decided to go into business, but licenses were hard to get. The qualifications were tough, and you needed a lot of capital to start up. We finally got our license in 1998, but we had no programs and no money left, so I decided to make something that is cheap and which few others will touch--adult entertainment.

What do we make? Anything that sells. Naked English lessons, people having sex in front of a panel of judges, housewives, young guys, old men. It's all a bit of harmless fun, but people do the stupidest things in this business!
Our strength is that we own all the rights to our shows and we broadcast 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We employ 80 people, up from 15 at the start. Our big customer is SkyPerfecTV. We earn up to [yen] 85 million a month from selling to them. About another [yen] 20 million comes from cable TV and love hotels, and we sell video-on-demand to Hawaii.
We market products over the Interact in English, Russian, Korean and Japanese. We have 10,000 subscribers a month paying [yen] 2,000 each, and we have also started to sell short clips to keitai companies. The Net is becoming a bigger part of our business, but it's still comparatively small.

One of Japan's highest-earning adult actresses and probably its most famous until she retired a few months ago, Maria Yumeno turns up in a West Shinjuku coffee shop rife with salarymen. She wears a short and glittering gold dress that barely covers her ample assets and brings male faces swiveling in our direction.
"JAPANESE MEN LOVE BIG breasts," she says, popping out a bare breast for closer inspection. "You're going red," she adds. "That's cute, but why are you embarrassed?
"I'm just playing a role, like a movie actress," she continues, slipping the wayward breast back into its gold pouch "When I step out the door, a switch goes on in my head and I become Maria Yumeno, the pore star who loves sex. It's not the real me. I designed and made her and now I act her. I know who I really am. She's like my best friend. If I didn't keep her separate from myself, I'd go crazy."
Like many in the sex industry, Yumeno has a published profile that is entirely bogus. The 24-year-old from Tokyo is in fact a 30-year-old from Yamaguchi who worked as a graphic designer after leaving school. The fact that she didn't begin her movie career until she was in her mid 20s--making her older and smarter than many of her counterparts--and that she still looks about 19 helps explain her career longevity.
Since (literally) bursting onto the scene in 1998, Maria has made over 60 movies, many with titles that play on the supposed erotic pleasures of her manga-like 37-inch bust and skinny girl's body. Walk into any big video rental store and you'll find Maria staring out of the covers of The Wild Bust, My Neighbor's Sister Has a G-Cup, The Busty Slave and the classic Give Me Endless F * * *.
It's just a role, but does it make her uncomfortable to have millions of men obsessed with her?
"Not at all," Yumeno says. "If they don't enjoy my movies, I'm not doing my job properly. The older they are, the harder I have to work, but that's okay. That's what I'm paid to do."
The cliches for why people work in the porn industry--childhood trauma and abuse, low self-esteem and absent fathers--are quite often true. Maria's father disappeared when she was a child and she says many women work in the industry precisely because they hate men and think porn is one way of symbolically controlling them. But don't underestimate the draw of porn's quick money and the passport out of a life of drudgery in a gray corporate bunker.
Top AV stars earn up to [yen] 3 million a movie, but they have a very limited shelf life--and their price goes down, not up. Most of the men, on the other hand, are willing to work for [yen] 100,000 or less. Machiki Katsumi, general manager of adult filmmaker V&R Planning Co., claims actresses can earn enormous sums of money in what is probably the only industry in Japan that pays women four or five times what men earn.
"A single shoot pays about [yen] 200,000," says Katsumi. "Some women like to work straight through, say for 20 days, when they can earn as much as [yen] 4 million. Some are obviously in financial trouble. But more important is the rise of part-time working culture. A lot of people just want to work for short periods and earn as much money as they can."
Most women are recruited by the ubiquitous scoots around Tokyo's large stations (Yumeno was scouted in Shibuya), but some walk through the door after seeing profiles of sex workers in easily available magazines like Tinkle and Bustier. Many of the smarter women recruit managers, sometimes from unusual places. "We had a girl come in here one day with her mother," claims Hiroyuki Tsunoda, president of Media Station Co. Women who last longest often carve out niches for themselves and earn a semi-loyal following.
"My specialty is breaking down the defenses of guys who are really straight-laced and having sex with them, but I've also done violent stuff, getting raped by three guys, that sort of thing," Yumeno says with a smile. "As soon as the director shouts 'cut!,' the guys completely change, start asking me if I'm all right. It's just a role. I don't hate men. Most of them are good to me, but they're weak."
Lots of men think women work in porn because they like sex.
"That's because we're good at our jobs. We make them think that. If they don't think that, we've failed."
The worst thing about the job, according to Yumeno, is "keeping a boyfriend. First of all, finding a guy who doesn't get jealous. Some men say they don't care and understand it's just a job, but most get jealous afterward. If I don't tell them who I am, someone will tell them or they'll check out my past, but I'm not interested in that sort of man anyway. There are few guys who are strong enough to stay around."
Yumeno has never hung around with her fellow actresses, most of whom she calls "stupid. I like people who are strong, who know themselves, like writers and artists. I like traveling. I've been all over Europe. I love art."
So what happens to porn actresses when they retire? Yumeno is trying to find out by transforming herself into an "all-round entertainer," venturing into singing, acting in variety programs, drama shows, movies and even webcasting (see www.yumenomaria.tv).
Her advice for aspiring actresses?
"If you really want to do it, then try it. But if you're half-hearted about it, forget it. Work in a Seven-Eleven."

As pool problems go, this one is a real gagger.
Overlook Pool in Manheim Township is having a problem with a pool pooper.
The culprit - pool officials think it's an adult or teen pulling a prank - has defecated in the pool a half-dozen times in the past three weeks, leading to temporary pool evacuations.
The problem is distressing patrons and lifeguards at the pool, which is between the Fruitville and Oregon pikes in the township.
Pool officials are on the prowl for the pooper, and say they will press charges if they catch the person. Possible charges could include disorderly conduct.
It's extremely frustrating, said Margie Lewis, township recreation director.
Said pool patron Beth Deliver of Manheim Township, It's pretty disgusting. It's ruining the good times that other families could be having.
The problem began earlier this month, Lewis said. The pool actually has had eight incidents, but she believes two of them could have been little children having accidents, as they occurred in the shallow end of the pool.
The other six incidents have occurred in the deeper end of the pool, mostly early in the afternoon.
When the problem has been detected, the pool is cleared for a half-hour, while lifeguards clean up the mess, test the chemicals and allow the pool's filtration equipment to help cleanse the water.
When the announcement is made over the loudspeaker to clear the affected pool, the lifeguards sometimes have a tough time managing people, two guards said today.
Emily Pendleton said people rush to get out of the water, which makes it hard to keep the situation under control.
Co-worker Devin Leahy said the pool had a week when the problem seemed to be happening constantly.
But there have been no incidents since Tuesday, when pool officials posted a sign saying they will remove the perpetrator and his or her family if the person is caught. Guards are patrolling the pool, looking for signs of trouble, Lewis said.
The sign also notes a reward will be offered for information regarding the pooper. Lewis said the reward will be a candy bar.
When the problem has occurred, some people have headed for the exits, receiving a coupon for a free return visit or a visit to the other township pool, Skyline, on Eden Road.
Lewis said Skyline has not had a similar problem this year.
The problem has put a damper on the recent unveiling of renovations to the facility, which now features three pools with water slides and other features.
Pool regular Charles Crumling of Lancaster said he is concerned about the effect of feces in the water, noting that is how some diseases are spread.
If the person doing it is trying to pull a prank, it's not a successful one, he said.
It's pretty obvious people aren't finding it funny, he said.
Pooping in the pool is not a new phenomenon.
In 1999, Overlook dealt with an isolated outbreak of the problem, which occurred twice in one day. The Lancaster County Pool had to close four times in the summer of 1997, due to the problem.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT THEIR job, internal auditors must be able to write, speak, and listen effectively. Of these three skills, effective listening may be the most crucial because auditors are required to do it so often. Unfortunately, listening also may be the most difficult skill to master.
Effective listening is challenging, in part, because people often are more focused on what they're saying than on what they're hearing in return. According to a recent study by the Harvard Business Review, people think the voice mail they send is more important than the voice mail they receive. Generally, senders think that their message is more helpful and urgent than do the people who receive it.
Additionally, listening is difficult because people don't work as hard at it as they should. Listening seems to occur so naturally that putting a lot of effort into it doesn't seem necessary. However, hard work and effort is exactly what effective listening requires.
Internal auditors must listen to explanations, rationales, and defenses of financial practices and procedures. They are constantly communicating with fellow employees whose backgrounds range from accounting to finance to marketing to information systems. In addition, explanations by fellow employees of any "unusual" practices often pose a significant challenge to an internal auditor's listening skills. Auditors can use the following techniques to improve these skills.
1. CONCENTRATE ON WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING. When listening to someone, do you often find yourself thinking about a job or task that is nearing deadline or an important family matter? In the middle of a conversation, do you sometimes realize that you haven't heard a word the other person has said? Most individuals speak at the rate of 175 to 200 words per minute. However, research suggests that we are very capable of listening and processing words at the rate of 600 to 1,000 words per minute. An internal auditor's job today is very fast and complex, and because the brain does not use all of its capacity when listening, an auditor's mind may drift to thinking of further questions or explanations rather than listening to the message at hand. This unused brainpower can be a barrier to effective listening, causing the auditor to miss or misinterpret what others are saying. It is important for internal auditors to actively concentrate on what others are saying so that effective communication can occur.
2. SEND THE NONVERBAL MESSAGE THAT YOU ARE LISTENING. When someone is talking to you, do you maintain eye contact with that person? Do you show the speaker you are listening by nodding your head? Does your body language transmit the message that you are listening? Are you leaning forward and not using your hands to play with things? Most communication experts agree that nonverbal messages can be three times as powerful as verbal messages. Effective communication becomes difficult anytime you send a nonverbal message that you're not really listening.
3. AVOID EARLY EVALUATIONS. When listening, do you often make immediate judgments about what the speaker is saying? Do you assume or guess what the speaker is going to say next? Do you sometimes discover later that you failed to interpret correctly what the speaker was telling you? Because a listener can listen at a faster rate than most speakers talk, there is a tendency to evaluate too quickly. That tendency is perhaps the greatest barrier to effective listening. It is especially important to avoid early evaluations when listening to a person with whom you disagree. When listeners begin to disagree with a sender's message, they tend to misinterpret the remaining information and distort its intended meaning so that it is consistent with their own beliefs.
4. AVOID GETTING DEFENSIVE. Do you ever take what another person says personally when what her or she is saying is not meant to be personal? Do you ever become angry at what another person says? Careful listening does not mean that you will always agree with the other party's point of view, but it does mean that you will try to listen to what the other person is saying without becoming overly defensive. Too much time spent explaining, elaborating, and defending your decision or position is a sure sign that you are not listening. This is because your role has changed from one of listening to a role of convincing others they are wrong. After listening to a position or suggestion with which you disagree, simply respond with something like, "I understand your point. We just disagree on this one." Effective listeners can listen calmly to another person even when that person is offering unjust criticism.
5. PRACTICE PARAPHRASING. Paraphrasing is the art of putting into your own words what you thought you heard and saying it back to the sender. For example, a subordinate might say: "You have been unfair to rate me so low on my performance appraisal. You have rated me lower than Jim. I can do the job better than him, and I've been here longer." A paraphrased response might be: "I can see that you are upset about your rating. You think it was unfair for me to rate you as I did." Paraphrasing is a great technique for improving your listening and problem-solving skills. First, you have to listen very carefully if you are going to accurately paraphrase what you heard. Second, the paraphrasing response will clarify for the sender that his or her message was correctly received and encourage the sender to expand on what he or she is trying to communicate.
6. LISTEN (AND OBSERVE) FOR FEELINGS. When listening, do you concentrate just on the words that are being said, or do you also concentrate on the way they are being said? The way a speaker is standing, the tone of voice and inflection he or she is using, and what the speaker is doing with his or her hands are all part of the message that is being sent. A person who raises his or her voice is probably either angry or frustrated. A person looking down while speaking is probably either embarrassed or shy. Interruptions may suggest fear or lack of confidence. Persons who make eye contact and lean forward are likely exhibiting confidence. Arguments may reflect worry. Inappropriate silence may be a sign of aggression and be intended as punishment.
7. ASK QUESTIONS. Do you usually ask questions when listening to a message? Do you try to clarify what a person has said to you? Effective listeners make certain they have correctly heard the message that is being sent. Ask questions to clarify points or to obtain additional information. Open-ended questions are the best. They require the speaker to convey more information. Form your questions in a way that makes it clear you have not yet drawn any conclusions. This will assure the message sender that you are only interested in obtaining more and better information. And the more information that you as a listener have, the better you can respond to the sender's communication.

LISTEN ACTIVELY
Not everyone has to possess the same style of listening, but internal auditors who use "active" listening will likely become much better listeners. Active listening demands that the receiver of a message put aside the belief that listening is easy and that it happens naturally and realize that effective listening is hard work. The result of active listening is more efficient and effective communication.

Are you an effective listener? Ask a peer that you communicate with regularly and who you know will answer honestly to respond "yes" or "no" to these 10 questions. Do not answer the questions yourself. We often view ourselves as great listeners when, in fact, others know that we are not.

1. During the past two weeks, can you recall an incident where you thought I was not listening to you?
2. When you are talking to me, do you feel relaxed at least 90 percent of the time?
3. When you are talking to me, do I maintain eye contact with you most of the time?
4. Do I get defensive when you tell me things with which I disagree?
5. When talking to me, do I often ask questions to clarify what you are saying?
6. In a conversation, do I sometimes overreact to information?
7. Do I ever jump in and finish what you are saying?
8. Do I often change my opinion after talking something over with you?
9. When you are trying to communicate something to me, do I often do too much of the talking?
10. When you are talking to me, do I often play with a pen, pencil, my keys, or something else on my desk?
Use your peer's answers to grade your listening skills. If you received nine or 10 correct answers, you are an excellent listener; seven or eight correct answers indicates a good listener; five or six correct answers means you possess average listening skills; and less than five correct answers is reflective of a poor listener.
